Zagare Cherry Festival

Introduction

Žagarė is famous throughout the Baltic region for cherries and horses, and in July 2005, the first ever Žagarė Cherry Festival was organised to celebrate these attributes. The event attracted more than 4,000 people throughout the day, from both Lithuania and abroad.

The mission of the Zagare Cherry Festival is to celebrate and promote cherries, tourism and community involvement, and to enhance the economic, entertainment, and cultural interests of the Zagare Region.

Zagare, located in the north of Lithuania on the Latvian border, is one of the oldest towns in the country, having been first mentioned in historical documents in 1198. This makes it even older than Riga, which is situated just 90km to the North.

Zagare is a diverse town, rich in both cultural and natural heritage and is home to one of Lithuania's spectacular Regional Parks.

The 2006 Žagarė Cherry Festival will be a 2-day event, including;
Baltic Hanover Young Horse Competition
Sports competitions;
Football competition,
Mini-marathon (3km and 10km)
Arts exhibitions presented by the Japanese Embassy and the Vilnius Arts Academy
Popular music Concert featuring famous Lithuanian performers
Classical music concert performed by a Choir from England
Historical exhibtions and lectures

We welcome you to the festival to discover and enjoy what is on offer in our special town! .
